On the Parent Blog…
If anyone would like to write anything for the blog, I’d love to have it. You can either send me a link, write about district news or events, write about your child’s classroom, or anything that you think other parents would be interested in. I would also love anything written by one of the students. Let me know if you’re interested in working on the blog. Blogging is super easy and if you can send an email, you can post a blog entry! Thanks to Joanne Dunbar for sending in pictures of the first graders on the first day of school! If you’re volunteering in the classroom, chaperoning on field trips or on campus, please take a picture or two and send them to me. I would also be happy to post any work by your child – artwork, stories, poems, etc. And remember, any school news is always posted to the parent blog, so please bookmark the page and check it often!

PTA…
If you didn’t turn in a donation or pledge form at MAZE day, you can still turn one in. The PTA still needs your donations to support our P.E. program, Art, Music, Field Trips, and various needed items and supplies for this school year. Checks can be made out to Roosevelt PTA. Please stop by the office or send your pledge forms in an envelope to school with your child. Thank you for supporting the extra curricular programs at Roosevelt!

Donation Matching…
If you want to make a donation to Roosevelt’s PTA (or have already made a donation), make sure to check with your company’s HR department to see if they offer donation matching to 501c non-profit organizations. For a partial list of corporations that offer donation matching programs, take a look at our Fundraising page.

Art in Action for this year…
Volunteers for Art in Action are needed for each grade level this year. You can sign up to be a teacher (docent) or assistant. If you are interested in being a docent, training is provided and you don’t need any previous art experience. Art is such a wonderful addition to our school’s curriculum and, like music instruction, develops areas in the brain that are responsible for creativity, critical thinking skills and language. The time commitment is about 1 hour per month. This is one of those volunteer opportunities that is a low commitment with big rewards! If you are interested, or have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or Karen Berg-Smith at kazberg66@yahoo.com

Updates to the school uniform policy…
All students must wear khaki or navy pants, skirts or shorts and a navy or white collared shirt (i.e. polo shirt). Students may also wear a school spirit t-shirt or sweatshirt. In the colder months, if children need layers to be worn in the classroom, the Roosevelt sweatshirts are permitted as well as navy or white sweaters. Plain navy or white long sleeve shirts or t-shirts may be worn under their uniform shirts. Socks should be white or navy. For safety reasons, all students must wear tennis shoes.

Don’t Forget…
Make sure to put your child’s name on any sweaters, sweatshirts or jackets that they bring to school. The Lost and Found was overflowing with unmarked jackets and sweaters last year that could have been returned if they had a student’s name on the tag.

Have a great week!

Be Safe for Drop Off and Pick Up…
Roosevelt’s only official drop off zone is on Vera Avenue at the gate for the school yard. Speed bumps have been installed in front of the school to slow traffic. Please be courteous and do not park in the Principal, Office Manager or Staff parking spaces in front of the school. If you are dropping your child off across the street, please make sure that your child crosses in the crosswalk with the crossing guard. Another option is to park on Euclid Avenue or in the Rite Aid parking lot.

Do not use the school’s bus loading zone – this zone is for school buses only, and dropping kids off at this location is not only dangerous, it also slows down the flow of all the other cars, and any buses coming in.

Please allow extra time – everyone is very busy, but that’s no excuse to put our kids’ safety at risk – leave a few minutes early to allow ample time for drop off and pick up. Just a few minutes can make a great difference, and help to make the traffic circulation around our school more efficient for everyone.

Please be courteous and respectful of our school’s neighbors and never park in front of driveways.

Reminder…
The school gates are locked at 8:30am and not unlocked until 1:55pm (or 12:55 on Minimum Days). If you are coming on to the campus after 8:30am, you need to sign in at the office.

Welcome!…
Roosevelt has several new staff members this year, so make sure to welcome them to Roosevelt!

Susan Novikoff -5th grade
Maureen McPeek – 4th grade
Michelle Bacolini – Kindergarten
Emily Morgan – SDC 3-5
Jenny Brandt – 1st grade
Gillian Parkhurst – 3rd grade

On the Parent Blog…
I’ll be posting bios of our new faculty members on the blog this week. This year I would really love to show more of the daily life at Roosevelt. It’s difficult for the teachers to consistently take pictures since they’re busy with class instruction. So, if you’re volunteering in the classroom, chaperoning on field trips or on campus, please take a picture or two and send them to me. I would also be happy to post any work by your child – artwork, stories, poems, etc. And remember, any school news is always posted to the parent blog, so please bookmark the page and check it often!

The Redwood City Parks and Recreation Department will be offering an after school program at Schaberg library for students in grades 1 – 6. The cost is $40 per month per child. Registration forms will be sent home this week with your child.

Have a great week!

MAZE Day Information

The MAZE Day paperwork went out in the mail on Wednesday, August 10, so you should be receiving it within the next few days. If you have not received your MAZE Day packet by next Tuesday, extra forms will be available for you at school. This year’s MAZE days are scheduled for the following dates and times:

Tuesday, August 16th – 5:00pm to 8:00pm
for families with last names starting with A – L

Thursday, August 18th – 4:00pm to 7:00pm
for families with last names starting with M – Z

You need to fill out all of your forms before MAZE Day, but if you are having trouble with any of your forms, assistance will be provided in the YMCA After School Room (the building next to the Cafeteria) during both MAZE days. All Roosevelt parents, not just Kinder and new families, are asked to attend. This year, MAZE Day will be held in both the school cafeteria and the YMCA After School Room. Once you’ve turned in all of your completed forms, you will receive your child’s teacher/class assignment and school supply list.

If you are unable to come on your assigned MAZE Day, you may attend the other day. If you can’t attend either day, please bring your paperwork into the office in the days before the start of school, or in the morning before the first day of school.

What You Will Need…
Don’t forget to bring your completed paperwork and also bring your checkbook or cash or donation pledge sheets. Roosevelt t-shirts and sweatshirts will also be for sale during both MAZE days.

MAZE Day Volunteers Needed…
If anyone can volunteer on either MAZE Day, your help would be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please contact our PTA president Aurora Gallardo.

Uniform Exchange or Donation…
If you would like to participate in the uniform exchange or have uniforms that you would like to donate, you can bring them to MAZE day for collection. Please make sure that any uniforms for exchange or donation are clean and gently used. (Please no holes, rips or stains.)

Looking for Snack Donations…
This year the PTA will be giving our incoming Kindergarten families an orientation on the first day of school. We would like to be able to offer them some light refreshments after the orientation. We are asking for donations of cookies or muffins or any other morning snack item. Please contact Trish Reilly Taylor if you are able to bring something in.

Tour Volunteers Needed…
As part of the PTA orientation, the new Kindergarten families will be given a tour of our campus (the office, what to do if your child is late for school, the lost and found, the cafeteria, the library, etc.) If you are interested in leading a small group of parents or supervising the new Kindergarten students on the playground, please contact Trish Reilly Taylor or Principal Girardi.
