a. New Mexico

Raccoon Bucks…
In addition to the ice cream truck that has parked next to Schaeberg Library every afternoon at dismissal time, there is now an ice cream cart at the Schaeberg gate. Raccoon Bucks are available for sale at $1 each in the school office.

Spirit wear…
All sizes have been restocked and are again available for sale in the school office. If you’re stopping by the office in the morning or just before afternoon dismissal to purchase spirit wear, please be patient with Gwen and Rosie. Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is b. Mississippi! Every public school in Mississippi holds a Reading Fair competition. The winners from each school then move on to a district wide competition, then a county wide competition and finally a state wide competition.

As far as we know, Roosevelt is the ONLY school in California that holds a Reading Fair competition! Last year, we had some pretty great entries, so everyone is really excited for this year’s competition.

Please come to our Pizza & Prep Night on Tuesday, December 2 at 6:00pm in the Cafeteria to find out more about this year’s Reading Fair (to be held on January 13). If you sign up to participate in this year’s Reading Fair, you will receive a free tri-fold board and a set of art supplies!

Trivia Question…
8th grader Jose M. has asked for the return of the trivia question, so it’s back! Some weeks we will be offering a prize for the first correct answers sent in, so watch for those and send in your best guess! Jose M., for paying close attention to the emails and noticing that the trivia question had disappeared, you’ve earned 5 Raccoon Bucks!

So, in honor of Roosevelt’s Book Fair this week let’s see what you know about the book circulation in our school’s library:

According to statistics for the 2013/2014 school year, how many books were checked out of the Roosevelt school library?

a. 15,192
b. 17,343
c. 19,550
d. 25,430

Make your guess and find out if you’re right at the bottom!

Chocolate Sales…
If you haven’t turned in your money for your boxes of chocolate, payment is now due! The PTA has written a check to World’s Finest Chocolate and had to pay in full for all boxes taken. The PTA needs that money for planned programs for the students and so we need that money brought into the office IMMEDIATELY.

Book Fair…
The Book Fair is being held the week of November 17 – 21. If you are a 7th grade parent, be sure to look for sign up sheets to volunteer during the week, the evening event or the break down on Friday afternoon.  Parents are asked to sign up for at least one time slot and/or to bring items for the evening event. All money raised from the coin drive and Book Fair sales go towards the purchase of new books for our school library and the classroom libraries so it’s vital that the Book Fair have enough volunteers to keep it open. Paulette cannot do it alone, so please sign up for a time slot to help out!

Street Sign Winners…
If you were one of the lucky 6 winners of the REF raffle that won a hallway street sign, please contact the school office or Guy Taylor at guytaylor123@yahoo.com with the name you want on your sign. You can choose to use your child’s first or last name with Street, Blvd, Way, Place, Court, Lane, Avenue, Road, etc. The sign will be installed when they come in and you will be notified that the sign has been installed. To log on, go to https://Hosted122.renlearn.com/278977/HomeConnect That will open up a page requesting your child’s User Name and Password. Letters went home to parents with this information, but if you don’t have it, have your child enter the information. Trivia Question Answer…
The correct answer is d. 25,430! That’s a lot of reading! If you guessed c. 19,550, you were partially correct. That is the number of AR quizzes that were taken last year! Roosevelt is very lucky to have such a wonderful library and librarian to oversee it all.Library

How can you support our library?
1. Make sure that your child takes care of any school library books that come home to ensure that the books will last for years to come and can be enjoyed by all.
2. If your child loses or damages a book, please pay the fine in full so that the book can be replaced.
3. Come to the Book Fair. All profits made from book sales go right back into an account to buy more books for the library and classroom libraries.
4. Volunteer to help with the Book Fair! We only have a few volunteers signed up to help with the Fall Book Fair (the Spring Book Fair will be hosted by Kinder parents). Please contact the school office at 369-5597 or email Sarah Coyle at scoyle@rcsdk8.net, Julie Gordon at jgordon@rcsdk8.net or our librarian Paulette Elliott at pelliott@rcsdk8.net if you want to help out. If your parent/teacher conference is scheduled for this week, consider coming a little bit early or staying a little bit after your conference to help out!

Have a great week!

Checks can be made out to Roosevelt PTA or you can pay by credit card in the school office.

How to Pay by Credit Card Online
If you want to be entered, but can’t get in to the office to pay by credit card before noon tomorrow, there are two ways to do it online:

If you have a PayPal account, you can have funds transferred directly into the Roosevelt PTA account by sending a payment to reftreasurer@gmail.com. In the message box, put your child’s name and room number. Under “What’s this payment for?”select Friends or Family.

OR

Go to the parent blog at www.rooseveltparents.com and click on the “Donate” button on the upper right hand corner of the blog. Put in your donation amount. Then log in to your PayPal account or click “Continue” next to the credit card icons. When filling out the form, make sure to click on the link for “Student Name & Room Number” to enter your child’s information.

That’s it! The PTA treasurer will credit your account and fill out a raffle ticket for your entry. You will also receive your gift shopping bag and green t-shirt on Monday.

Will you be one of the lucky winners?

Did you already pay the $130 pledge but haven’t received your goody bag, raffle ticket or green shirt? Please contact our PTA treasurer Guy Taylor at guytaylor123@yahoo.com

Chocolate Sales…
If you haven’t turned in your money for your boxes of chocolate, payment is now due! The PTA has written a check to World’s Finest Chocolate and had to pay in full for all boxes taken. The PTA needs that money for planned programs for the students and so we need that money brought into the office ASAP.

Kindergarten Tour & Open House Night…
Do you know anyone with a child that is eligible for Kindergarten next year? Once again, in addition to daytime tours, Roosevelt School is hosting a Kindergarten Tour and Open House Night to be held on Wednesday, November 5 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.  Contact Roosevelt’s school office at 650-369-5597 to RSVP for this event and/or to schedule a daytime tour.

Help Needed!…
There are just a few things we need help with for Wednesday’s Kindergarten Tour Night. First, and most importantly, we need Roosevelt parents to spread the word! If you have friends, neighbors or family members with children that are eligible for Kindergarten next year, encourage them to attend. Let your former preschools know about this event and bring them a flyer. We also need flyers distributed around town and to local preschools. Extra flyers are available in the school office if you would like to take some to hand out to any businesses or preschools. We also need help the night of the tour greeting parents in the office and showing them where the Kindergarten classrooms are. If you are available to help out on Wednesday night, please contact Trish Taylor at trishreillytaylor@gmail.com or one of our Kindergarten teachers.

PTA Membership…
Do you want to have a say in how the PTA spends your money and any other money raised by fundraisers throughout the year? Then send in your membership form with your yearly dues ($10 for individual or $15 for family).  Our PTA has to send this money to the state PTA to maintain our school’s PTA membership. PTA members have voting rights at PTA meetings and general PTA assemblies. Come to the next PTA meeting on Monday, October 27 at 6:00 and if you’ve paid your membership dues, you can vote during the meeting!

Accelerated Reader…
Attention parents of students in grades 2 -8: you can now view you child’s Accelerated Reader progress online! Renaissance Home Connect is a tool that allows parents to log in to a Web site and view a snapshot of their child’s Accelerated Reader progress. That progress includes average percent correct on quizzes, number of points earned, and results on the last quiz. In addition, parents can view all the Accelerated Reader quizzes their child has taken, and can access an online search tool, AR Book Finder, to search for books using various criteria, including author, subject, or reading level. To receive an email when your child has completed an Accelerated Reader Quiz, click the Email Setup link and enter your child’s name and up to six email addresses to receive updates.

To log on, go to https://Hosted122.renlearn.com/278977/HomeConnect That will open up a page requesting your child’s User Name and Password. Letters went home to parents with this information, but if you don’t have it, have your child enter the information. Once you are in the system, you will be able to see the books your child has read and what their progress is towards their point goal. Please note: This site currently doesn’t work on all browsers, but it does work on Safari.

Outdoor Education & Yosemite…
5th & 6th grade families are asked to please turn in their payments for this year’s Outdoor Education and Yosemite weeks. Payments may be turned in to the school office. Checks and credit cards are accepted.

School Site Council Elections…
Parents are needed for this year’s School Site Council. Are you interested in working with other parents, teachers and staff to create a school filled with rich and challenging programs? Do you believe parents should have a say on how school programs and planning works? Do you want to learn more about how an elementary school is run? Are you willing to serve a one or two year term? Please fill out the pink interest form that came home in last week’s blue folder. If you have any questions, please contact our site council president Dave Goulden at dave.goulden@gmail.com

Spirit wear…
All sizes will be restocked and available for sale in the school office on Wednesday, November 5. If you’re stopping by the office in the morning or just before afternoon dismissal to purchase spiritwear, please be patient with Gwen and Rosie. There is always a lot going on in the office during those times, so it may take a while for them to get the chance to retrieve the items for you from the storage room. Also, if you are paying cash, please have exact change – the office is not allowed to hold cash to make change. Checks should be made out to Roosevelt PTA. You may also pay by credit card.

On the Nov 4 Ballot…
There are two items on this November’s ballot that will have a big impact on education in California.

The first is the race for State Superintendent of Education. Tom Torlakson is running for another term and his opponent is Marshall Tuck. Both participated in a debate that can be seen at http://edsource.org/2014/tuck-torlakson-debate-union-power-lawsuit/67916#.VE04NeevUXw Their biggest difference: Torlakson is for keeping the current teacher tenure system and Tuck wants to reform it.

The second item, Proposition 2 (Rainy Day Budget Stabilization Fund) is a way that Sacramento legislators intend to prevent big budget cuts in times of economic hardship for the state. The League of Women Voters has a basic recap of this proposition at http://cavotes.org/vote/election/2014/november/4/ballot-measure/proposition-2  Opposition to this proposition is by a statewide parent group called Educate our State. They site a similar bill passed in 2004, but the state borrowed money from education budgets to pay for state debts with the promise to pay it back, but that money has not been repaid and school districts have had to make massive cuts. To see Educate Our State’s opposing viewpoint, go to www.educateourstate.org
