The festivities begin tonight (Friday) at  6:00pm with the Tacos La Barca food truck if you don’t want to cook in the heat. Popcorn, candy and slushies will be for sale in the cafeteria. All proceeds to benefit Roosevelt school.

Roosevelt Remembers ~ Army Specialist Jesse Snow

On this Memorial Day, Roosevelt once again honors the memory of Army Specialist Jesse Adam Snow and other military personnel that have been killed while serving our country.

We ask that all Roosevelt families take a moment today to remember the sacrifice that has been made by Jesse Snow and others that have died in service to our nation. The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence.



In November 2010, second graders at Roosevelt wrote letters to soldiers serving in Afghanistan. The letter written by Kelsey E. to Army Specialist Jesse Adam Snow arrived too late. Jesse was killed saving another soldier in his unit. Jesse’s father, John Snow of Fairborne, Ohio, received the letter with Jesse’s personal effects and contacted Roosevelt’s Office Manager, Gwen Thomas.

Dear Gwen,

It was kind of you to take my call today. I’ve attached Kelsey’s letter (to Jesse) for your information. I’m mailing out the 2 CDs; of Jesse’s life and of his return and funeral. There is nothing that is sad about any of these but you may want to review them if you decide to show them to the kids. You have permission to show them to whoever you’d like but all I ask is that they remember my brave son, Army Specialist Jesse Adam Snow. I took a section out of his obituary so you’ll know a little about him.

Jesse, age 25, of Fairborn Ohio, was killed in action in the Kunar Province Afghanistan on Nov 14, 2010 when insurgents attacked their unit. Jesse was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division—”Screaming Eagles” (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. ARMY_PFC_JESSE_SNOWHe was born on April 18, 1985 at the former K. I. Sawyer AFB in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to CMSgt (USAF retired) John and Janice Snow. ARMY_PFC_JESSE_SNOWHe is survived by both parents and brothers MSgt (OHANG) John Jr (Emily) of Xenia OH, Daniel of Columbus OH and brothers, Robert, Cadet Lt Col Alex, and sister Megan, all from Fairborn. Also the love of his life, his niece Amara Marie Snow and nephews Noah and Sam Lingerfelt and niece Brooke Lingerfelt.He was preceded in death by his paternal Grandmother Rose Snow. He is survived by his Paternal Grandfather MSgt (USAF retired) Wayne “Hank” Snow of Houghton MI, his Maternal Grandparents Joyce Lammi and Louis Munch of Calumet MI.He is also survived by 7 Uncles, 5 Aunts, and many cousins, all of whom loved Jesse very much. Most important, Jesse is survived by his “Band of Brothers” of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) who at this moment, are risking their lives daily, waging war in Afghanistan against enemy insurgents (note: they returned home on 21 Apr 2011). As a young boy, Jesse was active in Fairborn Weehawk football, Little League Baseball, basketball, and Babe Ruth baseball. He served as an Alter Boy at Mary Help of Christian Church of Fairborn where he made his 1st communion and confirmation. Jesse attended Baker Junior High where he played basketball and was a starter for the 8th grade football team which had the only undefeated season in school history.Jesse graduated in 2003 from Fairborn High School and was involved in various sports and a cadet in AF Jr ROTC.Jesse had a heart of gold and always considered the needs of others before himself. He did yard work for many of his neighbors and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Dayton. While deployed, he often distributed candy, toys, and chap stick to the local Afghan children. Jesse believed that making a better life for these children was just as important as serving his country. Unit members said that he shared his last meal with a fellow hungry soldier. He is loved and missed by his family, friends, community, and 101st Airborne Brothers. Jesse will never be forgotten.

John W. Snow

UPDATE: On October 28, 2011, the Silver Star Award was posthumously presented to Army Specialist Jesse Adam Snow of the 101st Airborne Division at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The Silver Star Award is the nation’s third-highest decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. According to the narrative accompanying the award, insurgents attacked the command post of Snow’s platoon with several rocket propelled grenades in a battle during OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM on Nov. 14, 2010.

Snow’s weapon system was immediately destroyed. Without a weapon and with disregard for his own personal safety, Snow assisted the wounded by performing life-saving first aid. At the same time, he spotted targets for the machine gun team and secured more ammunition for them when they were running low.

As the fire fight became more intense, Snow continued to assist those who were injured. At one point Snow even used his own body to shield another soldier from incoming machine gun fire.

Eventually Snow was fatally wounded. However, his courageous and selfless actions that day saved the lives of three fellow brothers in arms and solely denied the enemy the ability to capture any American soldiers in the battle.


Roosevelt continues to honor Jesse Snow’s memory by regularly sending letters and care packages to our troops serving overseas.

AIM High  is a summer “bridge” program for students in grades 5-8.  Please contact the school office if you need additional information. Applications must be turned into the office by Friday morning.

Outdoor Education…
5th graders will be returning on Friday afternoon from their week in Jones Gulch for Outdoor Education. Welcome back 5th graders!

Spring Break…
Our Spring Break is next week (April 4 – April 8). The school office will be closed. Classes will resume on Monday, April 11.

Handwriting After School Class…
Due to the elimination of handwriting from the state standards, students haven’t been taught handwriting for the past four years in California. Our PTA thinks that our students should still learn the fundamentals of handwriting so they have added a handwriting class to be offered after school for three weeks beginning this week.

The class begins on Tuesday, January 5 and will be held on Tuesdays & Thursdays after school for 3 weeks. Students must be in 3rd – 6th grade. There are currently 9 more spots available in the class. The fee is $40 which covers the cost of the instructor and all materials. Contact the school office at 369-5597 for more information.

Yard Duty Position Available…
Roosevelt currently has a yard duty position open. The hours are approximately 11:00am – 1:15pm. This is a paid position. If you are interested, please contact Gwen in the school office at 369-5597 or You will have to fill out an application with the district and get fingerprinted.

Reading Fair Kits…
If you and your child are interested in this year’s Reading Fair, you can still pick up a starter kits! The starter kits include 1 tri-fold presentation board, 1 set of markers, glue, construction paper and Reading Fair instructions. Please have your student come to the office to pick up an application. All participating students must return a signed application to receive a starter kit.

All grade levels may participate! Students in the younger grades may work on this project with their families.

Reading Fair entries are due on Monday, January 25. Judging will be held on the morning of January 26. Ribbons and prizes for the winning entries will be given at the Reading Fair Reception on Tuesday, January 26 at 5:30pm in the Cafeteria.

Friday, November 6 is the last day to get your $150 in to be entered into the Roosevelt Enrichment Fund Raffle! Are you in…to WIN? Families that have turned in their $150 donation to the Roosevelt Enrichment Fund are entered into a drawing for an iPad Mini or have one of the school hallways named after your family! If you are making monthly payments and you pay your $150 pledged amount by Friday before 2:00pm, you will be entered into the raffle. Checks can be made out to Roosevelt PTA or you can pay by credit card in the school office. Will you be one of the lucky winners?

AR Goals…
The first Accelerated Reader (AR) goal period ends next Friday, November 13! Students must have met their 1st reading goal by the end of the school day on Friday the 13th to qualify for the first AR party hosted by our school librarian, Paulette Elliott. Students who have made all three goals for this school year will be invited to the AR Banquet in the spring.  (Students who are reading at a level 10 and up have been assigned an AR goal.)

You can view you child’s Accelerated Reader progress online! Renaissance Home Connect is a tool that allows parents to log in to a Web site and view a snapshot of their child’s Accelerated Reader progress. That progress includes average percent correct on quizzes, number of points earned, and results on the last quiz. In addition, parents can view all the Accelerated Reader quizzes their child has taken, and can access an online search tool, AR Book Finder, to search for books using various criteria, including author, subject, or reading level. To receive an email when your child has completed an Accelerated Reader Quiz, click the Email Setup link and enter your child’s name and up to six email addresses to receive updates.

To log on, go to That will open up a page requesting your child’s User Name and Password. Letters went home to parents with this information, but if you don’t have it, have your child enter the information. Once you are in the system, you will be able to see the books your child has read and what their progress is towards their point goal. Reminders for Friday, October 30!

Halloween Parade…Halloween
Roosevelt’s traditional Halloween Parade will begin at 8:15am! (Kinders are all on Early Bird Schedule) There has been a change for this year. Parents are asked to line up along the sides of the main hallway and the students will parade in their costumes down the hall. Students may come to school in their costumes. There are special activities in the school library during the parade for those students that DO NOT participate in Halloween celebrations, so please still send your child to school.

For those new to Roosevelt, you should know that Roosevelt LOVES Halloween and we go all out! Parents are welcome to join in the fun! Prizes are given in many different categories – best homemade, best makeup, best theme, etc.

Costume rules: no toy weapons and no gore.

Please remember that the students need to change back into their uniforms after the parade, so send them with a bag for their costume and pack a uniform if they are not able to wear it under their costume. Why do we ask students to change? Some costumes restrict mobility or vision which wouldn’t be safe. Also, we want to make sure that the costumes go home in the same condition that they were in the morning of the parade.

Class Parties…
Many classes/grades will be having Harvest themed parties at some point during the day. Please check with your child’s teacher to see if any food items or supplies are needed.

3rd Grade Field Trip…
Room 5 will be leaving soon after the parade for their field trip to Woodside Store.

Spooktacular Bingo!…
Don’t miss out! Come and join in the fun with a night of Spooktacular Bingo at 6:00pm. Our Bingo nights are always so much fun! Who will this year’s Bingo callers be? Will our Bingo callers carry on the tradition and come in costume? There’s only one way to find out! Come in your costumes or just come as you are – it’s a fun night for the whole familiy!

Food and beverages will be for sale during the event as well.

This event is sponsored by the Roosevelt PTA and made possible by contributions from our generous families to the Roosevelt Enrichment Fund.

Chocolate Money Due…
Friday, October 9 is the last day to turn in money from chocolate sales. Please send your envelopes with $60 per box of chocolate with your child or drop them off in the school office. Please turn in any money due ASAP to the school office. The PTA has to send the final payment for all boxes taken and the money needs to be in the bank account. Thank you!

Beautification Day…
Once again Peninsula Covenant Church is generously sponsoring a Beautification Day at Roosevelt School to be held on Saturday, October 17. Our teachers have submitted their wish lists and projects that they would like completed in their classrooms (i.e. cleaning shelves, organizing books, etc.) as well as other small projects all over the Roosevelt campus. MAZE Days Reminder!

Don’t forget! Tuesday and Thursday are the scheduled MAZE Days at Roosevelt!  reminder

Tuesday, August 18 – for students with last names M-Z from 4:30pm-7:00pm
Thursday, August 20 – for students with last names A-N from 4:00pm-6:00pm

If the MAZE day date that was scheduled for your last name doesn’t work for you, please attend the other scheduled MAZE day.

If you can’t attend either date,  please register in the school office before school on Monday, August 24.

What do I need to bring with me?
You need to fill out all of your forms BEFORE  you come to MAZE Day. (If you are having trouble with any of your forms, assistance will be provided during both MAZE days.) In addition to your completed forms, bring your checkbook, credit cards or cash for the enrichment fund and spirit wear. Once you’ve turned in all of your completed forms, you will receive your child’s teacher/class assignment.

What else can I do at MAZE day?
You can purchase spirit wear, donate to the Enrichment Fund and sign up for volunteer opportunities.

Where does my money go that I give to the Enrichment Fund?
Any money collected for the Roosevelt Enrichment Fund goes towards the same programs that the PTA has always funded for the students of Roosevelt – art, field trips, chess instruction, classroom supplies, Girls on the Run, Choir, photography class, after school Spanish classes and much more!

This year the PTA is also fundraising for more technology in the classrooms with Chromebooks in grades 3-8, iPads in grades K-2 and Smartboards in more classrooms. Please help the PTA reach their goal!



MAZE Day Information

The MAZE day packets have been mailed, so check your mailbox for yours!

NOTE: MAZE Day Volunteers!entering-maze
If anyone can volunteer on either MAZE Day, your help would be greatly appreciated! Older students are also welcome to help with selling spirit wear, marking off forms or answering questions. Spanish speaking volunteers are needed as well.  If you can help, please contact or call the school office.

What are the dates for the MAZE days?
August 18 – for students with last names M-Z from 4:30pm-7:00pm
August 20 – for students with last names A-N from 4:00pm-6:00pm
Who needs to attend MAZE day?
ALL Roosevelt parents (not just TK/Kinder and new families) need to attend.
I can’t come to my scheduled MAZE day. Can I go to the other one?
Yes. If the MAZE day date that was scheduled for your last name doesn’t work for you, please come to the other one.

I can’t come to either MAZE day. What do I do?
If you can’t attend either MAZE day, please come in to the office on Monday morning before school starts. Be aware that the first day of school is a very busy one in the office, so getting your paperwork turned in and your child’s class assignment will take more time.
I didn’t get my MAZE day packet. What do I do?
There will be blank forms available for you at both MAZE days, so please come even if you didn’t receive a packet in the mail.

Do I have to be at MAZE day for the two hours that it’s open?
No. The scheduled times are just a window. You can come any time during the scheduled time.

What do I need to bring with me?

Why don’t the MAZE day packets go out earlier?
The paperwork doesn’t go out until just before school starts for many reasons:

1. The school office is closed and the staff is on vacation until the second week of August.
2. The office doesn’t receive the final enrollment list until the weeks before school starts, so even if the office was open, they wouldn’t have a complete list of addresses
3. PTA volunteers have to submit pieces for the packets
4. Everything has to be translated and then copies must be made.
5. One packet per student (over 650 this year) has to be assembled.
6. A mailing that big has to be scheduled with the Post Office by Gwen

The packets cannot be mailed out much earlier than they are because it wouldn’t be possible given the above timetable and logistical constraints.

Another Award…
Principal Girardi has been notified that Roosevelt will be receiving the 2015 San Mateo County Reading Association (SMCRA) Literacy Award for our school’s annual Reading Fair program!
The awards ceremony will be held on October 22 and Principal Girardi will attend to receive the award along with our new district superintendent, John Baker and school board members.

Summer Reading & AR Goals…
Summer Reading is a fun and can earn you points towards your August AR Goal. How may you quiz on books you are reading in the summer?

On Mondays and Tuesdays beginning June 29th – July 24th and August 3rd – 18th from 9:00 – 12:00, you may quiz at Roosevelt School. Just come to the Computer Lab, take your quiz and earn your AR points.

Ms. Paulette has set your summer reading goal points. We will hold our first Summer AR party the end of August for students who made their goals over the summer.

Summer Learning Challenge…
The Redwood City Public Library and Friends of the Redwood City Library invite you to join the the Summer Learning Challenge! To participate, read or listen to books all summer and complete fun learning activities. You can earn prizes along the way such as free books, coupons for local activities, and tickets for a drawing at the end of the summer. (One lucky student will win a $1000 college scholarship!).

Dress code for grades 6-8 ONLY:

White, Black or Navy – collared shirts/tops
Black, Navy or White – sweaters, jackets.

School spirit t-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants are also considered part of the dress code for grades TK-8. Roosevelt logo polo shirts, t-shirts, jackets and sweatpants will be sold at MAZE day, so you can stock up.

Students may also wear any t-shirts earned from participating in any of the RCEF events (4th of July Fun Run or OktobeRun) or by participating in the after school sports program sponsored by the Redwood City Parks and Recreation Department as uniform.

Some Last Reminders…

Just some final reminders to finish out the week:Keep Calm - Summer

The Kindergarten classes will be giving their PBL Presentations on Wednesday, June 3 at 8:00am followed by a Cereal Reception. Then, at 10:00am, they will celebrate the end of Kindergarten with a Farewell Festival.

After the Farewell Festival Kindergarten families are encouraged to come downstairs for the 8th grade hallway walk. (see below for more information)

3rd Grade…
On Thursday, June 4 at 8:20am, the 3rd graders will be presenting their PBL Unit – How the environments of the 7 biomes are changing/affecting animals’ adaptations in those regions. Students will be acting as news reporters reporting on the 7 biomes and the climate changes within those regions. Every student will be giving a report on animals within those 7 biomes and any adaptations that the anmimal has had to make in order to survive. *Please make sure your student comes dressed in business attire.

4th Grade…
The 4th grade classrooms will be showcasing what they’ve learned about California Missions PBL Presentation on Wednesday, June 3 at 8:30am in Rooms 2 & 3. All are welcome to see the Ohlone huts and the giant Missions built in the classrooms. If you’re on campus at that time, try to stop by. The kids have done an amazing job!

8th Grade…
The final 8th grade graduation practice is on Wednesday, June 3 at MIT at 9:45am. The students will return to campus at approx 11:20am and they will walk down the main hallway which will be lined with the students from all grades to cheer for the graduating class. If you are on campus, please join the student body for this wonderful tradition.

At 6:00pm on June 3, the 8th grade class will have their graduation ceremone at MIT Auditorium.

The 8th graders will enjoy a Pool Party at PCC on Thursday, June 4 and then a celebratory breakfast on Friday, June 5. The 8th graders are dismissed after their breakfast. Congratulations to Roosevelt’s Class of 2015!

Field Day!..
This year’s Field Day will be held on Thursday, June 4. Please make sure your child is wearing sunscreen in the morning. Students in grades TK-7 will be participating this year. (8th graders will be at their pool party.) Feel free to come and cheer for your child!

Art Show Help Needed…
It’s not too late to lend a hand preparing for the Thursday Art Show! If you can help with the prep, labeling or installing, on Wednesday, May 20 or on May 22 to take it all down, please come to the YMCA room just off of the lower playground. Artistic ability is NOT needed, but you will have to know how to use a stapler! The art work has to be stapled to display boards and tables need to be covered. The students have been working hard all year on their artwork, so please come and help to get it looking it’s best!  For more information contact Marlene at

It’s time to see what the students have been working on all year! Please come to your child’s class on Thursday, May 21 at 5:30 to see their amazing work. Friday, May 22 is the last day to turn in BoxTops for the classroom BoxTop Challenge! This is the last BoxTops Challenge of the year! Bring in your BoxTops between April 27 and May 22. Make sure you let us know what Room # gets the credit for your entry. The classroom that has collected the most BoxTops will win a prize! Good luck!

Bring your family and friends and join other Roosevelt families at what is always a sellout crowd at Stanford Stadium on June 27th at 7:30pm. Enjoy a nice summer night of professional Soccer with a fireworks show following the game.

Tickets are $25 each and a portion of that goes back to the school to help fund enrichment programs at Roosevelt. What better way to support your school then taking the family out for an awesome night of professional soccer? Turn your order forms in to your child’s classroom or the office. Extra order forms are also available in the office. Tickets will be available for pickup in the school office beginning on Tuesday, May 26.

Coffee with Principal Girardi…
Please come and meet with Principal Girardi over a cup of coffee on Wednesday, April 29 at 8:00am in the Upper Staff Room (next to Room 26) Hear first hand about district and school news, talk about any issues or concerns you may have or just come for the coffee. This is also a great opportunity to meet other Roosevelt parents! This is a very casual meeting so if you can only drop in for a few minutes, you’re still welcome to attend. Spanish translation is available for those that need it. If you have a younger child, you are welcome to bring him/her.

Tickets for Raccoon Games…
The deadline to reserve tickets for Saturday’s Raccoon Games for the boys of Roosevelt has been extended to Thursday, April 30. Please make sure to turn in your forms and $5 per person by the end of the school day.

Friday, May 1 is Free Dress Friday for all students

RCEF Benefit…
Benefit for a Brighter Future – RCEF Benefit at 5:30pm on Friday, May 1 at Canada College. Tickets are still available at

2015 Raccoon Games…
2015 Raccoon Games begin at 3:00pm with a scavenger hunt! Then it’s time for Hamster Ball races at 3:30 followed by more fun and games until 6:00pm.  Only one  special guest per boy is permitted. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door, so get your RSVP in by Thursday.  The 4th grade is responsible for this event but any parent may volunteer to help. Donations for food and drinks are needed.

If possible, please donate any of the following:
Hotdog buns
Capri sun pouches or juice boxes
Snack size bags of chips
Fruit & Veggie platters
Plastic forks, knives & spoons
Ketchup, mustard & relish
Items may be dropped off in the office during the week.

Spring Picture Day…
Wednesday, March 25 is Spring Picture Day. Students may wear Free Dress.

Free Dress Days…
Students who have turned in their forms indicating if they will be returning to Roosevelt or not for the 2015/2016 school year may wear Free Dress on Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27. Students who already wear Free Dress on Fridays for the World’s Finest Chocolate sales may wear Free Dress on Monday, March 30.

PBL Day!…
All Roosevelt parents are invited to a school tour to see what PBL looks like across grade levels. Come join us on Thursday, March 26 at 8:15am and see PBL in action!

8:15 – 8:45 come visit the Ohlone museum in 3rd grade
8:30 – 9:30 Visit the 4th grade “Invention Convention”
9:15 – 10:00 Kinder will be learning how to do research for their “What do Animals need to live and grow?” unit
9:00 7th grade students will be dissecting flowers as part of their Cell unit.

Saturday, March 28…
Planning meeting for the May 2 boys event at 10 a.m. in room 14. This year, in addition to the Princess Ball, Roosevelt will be hosting an event for the boys of Roosevelt on May 2. This event for Roosevelt boys only (just as the Princess Ball was a girls only event), but any parent may volunteer to help. The 4th grade is responsible for this event. Spanish Classes…
The next after school Beginning Spanish classes for grades 4-8 starts on Wednesday, April 8. There are only 15 spots available. Cost is $30 for the 6-week session and the class is being taught by Maribel Prado, a local Spanish teacher and tutor. Checks may be made out to Roosevelt PTA and turned in to the school office (cash also accepted). Please email Megan Goulden or Maribel Prado with any questions.

BoxTops Challenge!…reminder
Don’t make Principal Girardi wear Henry Ford Mustang spiritwear! The last day for the Roosevelt/Henry Ford BoxTops Challenge is Friday, February 27 so send in those BoxTops! Principal Girardi has challenged Henry Ford’s principal and the school that has collected the most BoxTops for the month of February will be declared the winner and the principal of the losing school will have to wear the other school’s spirit wear every Friday for a month! Let’s make sure that Henry Ford principal has to show some Roosevelt Raccoon pride by collecting and turning in those BoxTops this Friday!

Princess Ball…
We’re in the final days of ticket sales for the “Under the Sea” Princess Ball!!! This will be a daughter/VIP dance to be held on March 7 at 6:30pm. Who or what constitutes a VIP? Girls may invite a father, grandfather, older brother, uncle, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, etc. — basically anyone that is a Very Important Person in her life.  Ticket sales have already begun, so fill out your ticket forms and return them to the school office or your child’s classroom by Monday, March 2. Cost is $5 per person and includes desserts, photo and a night of dancing. Tickets WILL NOT be sold at the door.

Volunteer sign-ups are posted around school, please sign up to help at the dance. Also, the organizers are in need of food donations for the dance. Please contact Karen Berg Smith by Friday to see what is needed if you can help.
(2nd grade parents are being asked to assist with this event, but help is needed from all grade levels).

Spring Chocolate Fundraiser…
The World’s Finest Chocolate Spring/Easter candy fundraiser is almost over! Flyers and order forms are available in the school office. Orders are due on Friday, February 27. Orders will be distributed the week of March 30.

Creative Writing Camp…
Attention incoming 5th-8th graders! Experienced writer and college writing instructor, Beth Harrison, is hosting a Creative Writing Camp at Roosevelt School on June 8 – 12 from 9am-4pm. Students will be writing fantasy stories about characters that have magical powers. The students will also design and illustrate their stories. Roosevelt School students are being offered scholarships. All students must pay a $25 registration fee. All other costs are covered. Please contact Beth at 650-743-1959 or for more information.

Coffee with Principal Girardi Canceled…
Ms. Girardi has to attend a meeting on Friday morning and won’t be able to host Coffee with the Principal.
